On East‘s annual call for submissions will be advertised via the Department of East Asian Studies’ undergraduate listserv.
Eligibility
- Authors must be current U of T undergraduate students or graduates who obtained their undergraduate degree from U of T within the past year.
- Any author may submit up to two works.
- Submissions must relate to at least one of the following countries: China (incl. Hong Kong and Macau), Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, or Taiwan. In the case of translations, the original work must be written in a language of one of these countries. Works addressing relations between East Asian and non-East Asian countries are accepted.
- Works submitted to On East must not have been submitted or published elsewhere.
Works Accepted
Essays
- No page limit. However, 10-25 double-spaced pages is the suggested length. Shorter and longer works will also be considered. Chapters of longer works are also accepted.
- Include an abstract of up to 300 words.
- Follow the Chicago Manual of Style for footnotes and bibliography.
- Use 12 point Times New Roman font.
- Format your submission as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file.
Literary Translations
- Submissions must be an English translation of a work of prose or poetry.
- The original work must be in the public domain.
- Works of all lengths will be considered.
- Use 12 point Times New Roman font.
- Format your submission as a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file.
Photography
- Photos of all aspect ratios are accepted.
- Include a description of the photo (title, time, place, circumstance) of up to 300 hundred words.
- Format your submission as a .jpeg or .png file sized to at least 1020 pixels wide at 300dpi.
Art
- Submissions must be digital. Photographed/scanned versions of non-digital works (e.g. paintings, sculptures, etc…) are welcomed.
- Include a description of the work (title, medium, etc…) of up to 300 words.
- Format your submission as a .jpeg or .png file sized to at least 1020 pixels wide at 300dpi.
